What is Java?
Question:

What is Java and why do I need it?
Answer:

Java is an object-oriented programming language used to develop active content for web sites. A Java Virtual Machine, or JVM, is used to execute the Java code, or “applet,” provided by the web site. Some operating systems come with a JVM, while others require a JVM to be installed before Java can be used. Java applets are operating system independent.

JavaScript, also known as ECMAScript, is a scripting language that is used to make web sites more interactive. There are specifications in the JavaScript standard that restrict certain features such as accessing local files.

Blackboard uses Java extensively. Please see the Blackboard Student Guide for more information on installing and maintaining Java.
